Anyone who has had a wellness consult with me knows that I’ve told them to “Get in the Bath” more than once! There are many benefits and it’s easy to make a magnesium detox bath with essential oils. You can add several ingredients in the bath that promote wholistic wellness for your mind and body. My journey with wellness started with my son and a severe magnesium deficiency. Did you know that sleepiness, leg cramps, eye twitches, emotional distress, headaches, mood swings, painful bowel movements, and head tension are just a few symptoms of magnesium deficiency? You can use three types of magnesium therapeutically to support your body along with a wide variety of essential oils.
Magnesium
Magnesium is key to every function in the body from the gut to the brain. It’s important for cell health and supports multiple body systems. Our organ systems need magnesium as our bodies are trying to fight off internal and environmental threats. In water Epsom salt breaks down into magnesium and sulphate and is called salt due to its chemical structure. The combination of the two has many benefits!
I love to add Magnesium Chloride Flakes too, but it is more concentrated so less is more! Magnesium Chloride supplementation through topical absorption from a mineral tub bath supports the increase of the body’s gastric acid in the stomach. When we don’t have enough gastric acid, we suffer mal-absorption of other vitamins and minerals, improper digestion, and increased susceptibility to unwanted pathogens, and yeast passing through the gut. We then find our mood, our ability to fight pathogens, and sleep is out of balance. Magnesium improves digestion and that ultimately improves our immune health and emotional well-being.
Soak
You want to get in the tub with magnesium and soak for around 40 minutes total. The first 20 minutes you are releasing toxins and detoxing the liver. The last 20 minutes your body is absorbing all the minerals transdermal (through the pores), the essential oils, and the coconut oil. You want to make sure that you are drinking plenty of water or Natural Calm that contains the powdered Magnesium Citrate with a citrus essential oil and this will also help to restore electrolyte levels and flush toxins.
I also love to topically apply a homemade salve, body butter, or magnesium oil after getting out of the tub! Another tip is to add the magnesium citrate in the power form to the doterra body butter and stir it together!
Everyone in our family takes a magnesium detox bath weekly to support inflammation and pain from exercise, to relax before going to bed, for detox, and to support our immunity and digestion.
Save the bottles
Are you saving your bottles? I hope so! Just because you think that bottle of essential oil is empty, actually it’s not! There’s quite a significant amount of essential oil left inside your bottle. I take the reducer off and plop that bottle into the bottom of my glass jar and pour the Epsom salt right over the bottles and let them sit and infuse the minerals! You can even pour those bottles right in the tub and let them soak with you and watch the labels peel right off so you can repurpose your bottles!

Batching
I love to “batch” different items in our home for convenience! You can make several of these jars in advance and keep them on a shelf in your bathroom so when you get in the bath; they are ready to go! I prefer to use colored glass mason jars for my magnesium detox baths and other home items; bath jars, salve, etc… I use clear glass in my kitchen so that I keep food items separate from my home products! I also prefer to use wide mouth with plastic lids for all my mason jars!
Dry brush
Another one of my favorite wellness tips is to start dry brushing! This is very effective prior to getting into the shower or bath! Dry brushing is great for circulation and gets your blood flowing! You always want to start brushing at the bottom of your feet and move towards your heart! It’s a light brush upward and clockwise around your stomach. Pay attention to areas where lymphatic fluid can collect.
We also want to keep our lymphatic system moving and dry brushing helps with those pathogens that need to get out of our bodies. It’s also great for exfoliating your skin, your pores, and for healing and regeneration of your skin. This means it will help with cellulite too! Your always going to feel more alert after dry brushing because you are increasing your circulatory and lymphatic flow and your getting the blood moving! It takes little effort with lots of detox benefits! All you need is a natural bristle brush and you can add an essential oil of choice!
- Circulation: Lemongrass, Cypress
- Cell Repair: DDR
- Skin: Blue Tansy, Yarrow Pom
magnesium detox Bath
After getting the warm water running I like to add a few drops of the doTERRA body wash or the Adaptiv bubble bath. I then get in the bath and dump in my magnesium detox and mix it all in! I do a little dry brushing before climbing into the bath, apply my detoxifying mud mask, grab a good book and get ready to soak!
You can also diffuse essential oils in the bath or shower! I love my Oasis Shower Diffuser! It holds two bottles at once and you can do both at the same time or individually. My personal favorites are Ylang Ylang & Eucalyptus. It powers off automatically after 8 minutes. I feel like I have my own personal spa at home! I have also included a discount code for the shower diffuser below!
